"I want to be a performer"

I like the ephemeral thing about theatre, every performance  is like a ghost - it's there and then it's gone.
Maggie Smith

" I want to be a performer" - or I am a performer - where do I go from here?

Becoming involved in performance at whatever level has never been easier. Many starting out with no formal training can through sheer hard work advance within the performance ranks.

But be asurred it is hard work, dedication and yes ok luck which will get you there.

The reason it has become easier is the large number of options available from self promotion via websites, a wide range of "extra" work castings from these sites - programmes like X Factor and Britains Got Talent which has increased interest in the hidden talent out there. Ofcourse talent helps, but I am tempted to say some reality shows don't even require that!!

Let me make it clear at once however that I am not suggesting that anyone can do it without training - just that it is possible to make a start without it.

There is to my mind without doubt natural talent. Some of it is obvious, for example someone who can play musical instruments with "ease" or can express through acting skils charactor without it seems an effort at all. I have seen children as young as 8 who just have a natural gift for it - even if they did'nt even know it!

Weekend stage schools, drama clubs, local theatre workshops - singing and music and dance classes are there to support an help.

But despite this only a select few will advance to a high level - the reason is simple - it's very hard work, takes enormous dedication, and in the case of youngsters strong family support.

Very few "Billy Elliots" succeed without parents total involvement - it's a massive but potentionally rewarding experience for all.
